The Aims of Positive Images

The starting point for the aims of Positive Images is the Home Office [link to Home Office website] guidelines from which the project was initially funded.

The following aims are derived from Home Office "Connecting Communities Proposals for Race Equality Support Programmes" (2000/2001)

The Government has a vision of a diverse, inclusive Britain , in pursuing this vision there is a need to encourage greater respect, understanding, tolerance and appreciation of the different cultures and communities that make up British society in the 21 st Century. (8.1.2)

With reference to the
Connecting Communities funding Programme

The objective of this programme is to ensure that ethnic minorities are treated fairly in our society, that the rich and diverse contribution they make to the life of the nation is properly understood and celebrated. (8.3.1)

In terms of communities engaging with one another and celebrating diversity

There was a strong feeling that work in this area should have the active and visible participation of the white community, otherwise it will have little impact. (3.6.1)

Positive Images has further
identified its own aims as to:

To work with 2000 young people, from within Gateshead primarily, during the time-scale of the project.

To design and produce appropriate educational resources to achieve the overall project aims.

In addition to the primary aims
the project is also engaged in:

  • Representation of community groups in keeping with ethos of the Project
